Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that the win over Liverpool was a turning point for the club.

The Red Devils claimed a 2-1 triumph at Liverpool on Sunday to register their first Anfield success since January 2016 as they stunned the champions thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire

It was only weeks ago that reports stated that manager Ruben Amorim was under threat and the club were lining up a replacement as results struggled to improve. Now, after wins over Sunderland and Liverpool, many believe he is the right man for the job.

Neville called the win over Liverpool a “turnaround game” to provide a “springboard” for Amorim. He spoke on his podcast about the victory which he says shows that United have a team that can compete for a European spot.

"They've just gone into the top half of the table, to ninth, and I think if they win next week, they've got to start thinking of pushing up the league.

"Because they've got to get to a point whereby there's stability at the club, the only way there's going to be stability is through winning football matches.

"I think Manchester United have got a top-six squad, particularly when you know that they haven't got European football, and they haven't got the Carabao Cup now.

"If you look at the four or five players they've got up front in Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes behind them.

“And then the centre-backs they've got - Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, they should be able to get a top-six finish with the free weeks out of that squad."

United next face Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham in what are crucial games for Amorim as he launches his side up the table in hopes of securing a European position and holding his job down
