Newcastle were in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt of a move for Ekitike, 23, but had a club record £70 million offer turned down by the Germans earlier in the week.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have now entered the race to sign the Frenchman, although no formal offer has been made yet.
Ekitike was a standout for Frankfurt last season, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists in his 48 games across all competitions.
