Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has responded to Wayne Rooney's comments suggesting his side had celebrated too soon.

City’s supporters rubbed salt in Arsenal’s wounds on Sunday afternoon as they unveiled a banner reading “panic on the streets of London” from The Smiths’ 1987 hit ‘Panic’ after their 2-1 victory.

The win puts City just 3 points away from The Gunners as they aim to win in their game in hand against Burnley on Wednesday night.

Rooney claimed the celebrations were "a bit over the top" and were premature considering the season is not over.

Guardiola rejects Rooney's premature comments

Now, responding to Rooney’s comments, Guardiola has suggested that fans should be able to celebrate after a win that many suggest could hand his side the title this season.

"Wait until the end of the season to celebrate? Come on.

"I said to them 'every single game go to our fans and enjoy the moment.' What sense is there not to live it? You have to celebrate just once if you win? And if you don't win you cry all the time?

“Come on. Everybody knew that game. It was a final. Especially for us. Maybe not for them but for us, it was a final and of course you have to celebrate it."

Despite being Premier League leaders for 201 consecutive days, Arsenal could lose their spot at the summit on Wednesday night if City beat Burnley.

City will aim to steam roll Burnley and climb to the top of the table, a result fans will have been expecting after brushing aside Arsenal at the weekend.
