Former Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham defender William Gallas has spoken on Tottenham's appointment of Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi has been confirmed as Igor Tudor's successor on a five-year deal as he tries to save the club from relegation with just seven games remaining.

The Italian and his coaching staff will take charge of their first game at Sunderland a week on Sunday and he has the mammoth task of turning a side around who are winless in 2026.

Despite the board making it clear that De Zerbi was their first choice, Gallas spoke to BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds about how he may jump ship if the club drop down.

“I would have gone for Harry Redknapp. He’s got the experience. He’s been in this situation with Tottenham before, almost at the bottom of the table and you need to know what to say to the players to make them want to survive.

“I don’t think De Zerbi has that experience. Let’s say unfortunately Tottenham do go to the second division, do you think De Zerbi would stay? I think it is in his contract but if they go down, he’s leaving.

“You have to bring in the one manager who is going to save that club and keep them in the Premier League. Redknapp has the influence, he has that experience, to motivate the players and the squad.

“Now the question is whether he would have had the energy to do it all again because it is not easy even if it’s only for two more months until the end of the season. You need a lot of energy and when was the last time he was the manager? It was a long time.”

Spurs pushed hard to convince De Zerbi to take over before the summer according to reports as they seek to stay in the Premier League. If they do not achieve this, it will be interesting to see if De Zerbi stays or escapes to avoid Championship football.
