The 22-year-old thought he got the equaliser in Liverpool’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Sunderland on Wednesday, but his strike was deemed a Nordi Mukiele own goal.
That would have been Wirtz’s first league goal for Liverpool since he joined for a reported £116 million fee from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the Germany international admitted his side are going through a ‘difficult’ period but remained upbeat.
“First of all, I was very welcomed by the team. It’s a very good team and I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
“Of course, the last weeks have been difficult for us as a team, but we are on a good way to come back.
“We are doing everything to come back and win games. We wanted the win today. We want to be on top of the table, we just have to continue and work hard. Hopefully things can change.”
