Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has ripped into his old club as he mulls over the sale of David de Gea.

United have registered just one point in their opening two Premier League matches and have failed to score under manager Ruben Amorim who is currently struggling in the goalkeeper department. Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana are his only options between the sticks and many fans do not have a lot of faith in the pair who are far from world class.

Now, speaking on Rio Reacts, Ferdinand has revealed that the club should have kept former goalkeeper De Gea who many were saddened to see leave for free in 2023.

"I wouldn't have sold David de Gea, I would never have let him go... simple as that. I don't know why he was ever allowed to leave the building.

“Whoever allowed David De Gea to leave the building should have been made redundant and not worked in the game again.

“You can't be winning Golden Gloves at your football club and being the best player in the team, player of the year probably three or four times out of six or seven years and then go, 'Listen, see you later', when you are coming into your best years."

De Gea made 545 appearances for The Red Devils, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League among other honours. United are closing in on goalkeeper Senne Lammens, with the Belgian left out of Royal Antwerp’s squad at the weekend ahead of his transfer. However, he is unlikely to live up to De Gea who many pundits such as Ferdinand would take back in an instant.
