The Italian head coach declared the “48 hours” leading into the victory over Everton as “the worst” of his time at the club, because of a lack of support for him and his players.
Many have speculated about Maresca’s probable future, including former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher who suggested that his comments were aimed at the board and when a manager does that, they are often let go.
Speaking in association with OLBG, Stanton has revealed what Maresca’s body language conveys about how the next few months may pan out for the 45-year-old.
“Enzo Maresca looks wiped out, it’s almost like he hasn’t slept. The journalist was being pushy with him in getting him to clarify his comments from Saturday. Maresca is adamant that he’s already spoken about it, but the journalist kept coming back and back.
“His blink rate increases, which shows that he’s frustrated. We saw flashes of anger as if to say that he’s already clarified future to the media.
“That was the overriding emotion. The fact that he’s sick of being asked about it. He kept raising his eyebrows, which is another sign of frustration and anger.
“Maresca looks like someone that is thinking about his exit strategy and has one eye on the departure lounge. He looks out in the wilderness so it will be interesting to see what develops here.”
Asked if he is comfortable at Chelsea and committed to the club, Maresca answered: “Absolutely, yes.” Chelsea sit fourth in the Premier League, but their form has dipped of late, if results worsen then Maresca may be on the chopping block sooner than expected.
