White and Gyokeres crossed paths early in their careers at Brighton, and the England defender certainly knows what the Swedish international can do in front of goal. However, the striker has underperformed so far for The Gunners, which has concerned many fans.
After putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Emirates, Gyokeres has gone on to score two goals in his opening three matches Premier League matches, with both coming against newly promoted Leeds United.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s official website, the right-back has backed Gyokeres to succeed in North London as he recalls his time with him at Brighton.
“He’s a monster! He lives for goals, doesn’t he? He’s a constant threat,” White told Arsenal’s website. “You really don’t want to get in his way when you are playing against him, because he’ll just move you out of the way anyway!
"He’s such a big presence, and I think it will be a massive help that he’s already played in English football. You see a lot of people come to the Premier League, and they’ve had no taste of what it’s like and it can be a struggle.
“But for Viktor, he’s well-used to it. He played at Coventry, and I played loads of games with him at Brighton. So he’s seen it, he knows what it’s going to be like and what to expect from the defenders.”
Gyokeres only wanted Arsenal during the summer transfer window after rejecting approaches from Manchester United. The striker scored 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting last season and clearly he has an eye for goal. White is right to back the striker who should come into his own as he adapts to an Arsenal side destined for the title race.
