Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim singled out Manuel Ugarte, who he believed was nothing like the player he used to know.

Ugarte has made just three starts in all competitions this season, one of which came in the tragic Carabao Cup second-round loss to League Two side Grimsby Town earlier this season.

The Red Devils signed Ugarte from Sporting CP under former manager Erik ten Hag in a deal that may rise to around €60M. Since then, he has failed to hit the ground running in the Premier League and is becoming more of an outcast under Amorim as the months go by.

According to The Athletic, Amorim ripped into Ugarte given a dressing-down by in a meeting the day before United played Aston Villa in their final match of last season in which they won thanks to goals from Amad and Christian Eriksen.

The report claims that Amorim’s actions “caused a ripple of reaction among those in the squad” as many players switched to full focus and commitment to the side as the Portuguese tactician demands 100% at all time.

This same rant included Amorim delivering a pointed message to Alejandro Garnacho, warning him that he would need “a good agent” in the summer transfer window. Garnacho has since joined Chelsea, and Ugarte has been lucky enought to escape a sale so far ahead of the January transfer window.

Former United defender Gary Neville has since insisted that Ugarte is not good enough to be in the side and that Amorim is not the biggest fan of the playmaker.

Neville added: “I can’t help thinking that he (Ruben Amorim) doesn’t quite fancy him.

“He’s never really put him it from the beginning. He’s gone with Casemiro and Fernandes but Amorim needs to sort the midfield out.

“You can’t have that midfield. They’ve tried Mount, Fernandes, Ugarte, Casemiro but he’s changing a lot every game.”
