Timo Werner has been confirmed as a new San Jose Earthquakes player this week as he makes the move to the MLS.

The 29-year-old German star is under contract until June 2028 and will occupy a Designated Player roster spot in what is one of San Jose's biggest-ever transfers in club history.

Werner won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and has scored 24 goals in 57 appearances with the German national team before injuries and a drop in form led him back to RB Leipzig in 2022 where he managed just nine goals and four assists in 27 games.

He then found himself on loan at Tottenham in a move that did not work out once more and when he returned, Leipzig manager Ole Werner did not see him as part of the team.

He now joins the MLS side who acquired Werner's Discovery Priority from Red Bull New York in exchange for $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM).

“To have a player of Timo’s calibre coming in is simply outstanding for the club and the community,” Earthquakes head coach Bruce Arena said in the statement.

Werner delighted with a fresh start

Werner also spoke on the move which is rare for a player his calibre, considering he is just 29 years old and was featuring in the Premier League a few years ago.

“It's always a big decision to go to America, but everything is there to be successful,” said Werner.

"The stadium and the facilities are beautiful. Also, it really impressed me that an experienced manager like Bruce, who has had so much success in the league, flew over here to Germany to talk to me about the plan.

“The Earthquakes fans can expect to get a player who gives everything on the pitch, every game. Every club I’ve joined, I’ve wanted to win a trophy. In the end, I’ve always delivered. That's why I want to come to San Jose—to win.”

Reports state that Werner will not be relocating immediately and will continue training with RB Leipzig in the coming weeks. This is due to him and his wife expecting their first child at the end of February.
