Alvarez failed a doping test, where his sample was found to contain canrenone, a prohibited substance both in and out of competition, belonging to the category of diuretics and masking agents, according to the WADA prohibited substances list.
After receiving a 10-month suspension, Alvarez released a statement explaining the failed test.
He said, "After investigating the case, we have determined that I tested positive because I inadvertently took a hair loss prevention medication containing a banned substance.
"The disciplinary proceedings are currently under investigation and are subject to confidentiality, therefore I am provisionally suspended and am not authorized to make any further public statements.
"I deeply regret this situation, but, with the club's support, I am working on my defense in the hope of returning to the pitch as soon as possible."
