Postecoglou ended Spurs’ 17-year wait for major silverware when he landed the Europa League trophy last season after beating Manchester United thanks to a Brennan Johnson goal in the final.
Van de Ven never expected Postecoglou dismissal
However, Postecoglou was let go by the Lilywhites this summer after a 17th-place finish in the Premier League, with the club just a few points away from the relegation zone.
Despite such an awful domestic campaign, Van de Ven has spoken to The Overlap about how he was shocked to see Postecoglou let go so suddenly.
"He is a really good manager - I still really like him," he said.
"I don't know how it all went down behind the scenes, winning the Europa League then getting sacked.
"He was the manager that brought silverware to Tottenham - then afterwards when he got sacked, I sent a text to my dad and my friends and said, 'I never expected this.'"
Sacking Postecoglou was strange
Postecoglou finds himself without a club at present, while Spurs' successor Thomas Frank has been called under question in recent weeks as Tottenham continue to fail in the Premier League as they languish in 11th.
Van de Ven revealed that he wished the 60-year-old all the best after he was let go in what he calls a “strange decision”.
“I texted Ange as well and said, ‘All the best in the future. I didn’t say it was a strange decision from the club, but I said I never expected this to happen and I thanked him for the two years I had with him.
"I had a good relationship with him, I was close with him, and he was also the manager that brought me to Tottenham.”
