Ahead of United’s clash with Lyon in the Champions League last season, Matic reflected on his time at Old Trafford, where he spent five years without winning any silverware.
Matic claimed that Onana was "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's modern history" Onana responded by saying at least he had “lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world.”
Now, over a year later, Matic has opened up to FourFourTwo about the drama, which caused a stir amongst the media at the time.
"I said what I said before the game, just because he was a bit arrogant," the Sassuolo player told FourFourTwo. "He said, ‘We’re way better than Lyon.’ I don’t think you say that before a quarter-final in the Europa League.
“I wanted to put more pressure on him with my answer, and he made that mistake. I don’t know if our second goal was his mistake or a half-mistake. He’s a great goalkeeper – he had a good couple of years at Ajax, and at Inter.
“He could have done better at United, but in the circumstances at the club, there was too much pressure on him. If you ask me now, though, I don’t think he’s a bad guy."
Goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire sealed a comeback from United on the night, but many believe that Matic won the feud as Onana departed not long after the argument had ended as he made his way to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
