With aspects such as the Champions League expansion, a revamped Club World Cup and a never ending cycle of football, certain top players are playing more games than ever with some expected to play 55+ games a season which many think is unsustainable.
Former Dortmund and Bayern Munich star Hummels has spoken to Amazon about how players cannot keep up such a workload and a solution must be found.
"This continues to be an issue that needs to be addressed in football. You can't completely overburden the players. The workload is at its maximum.
“I’m always very worried that in the coming years, many, many top players will no longer be on the pitch in important games because they will eventually be worn down by the strain.”
FIFA has been accused of “turning a blind eye to the basic needs of players” in a statement issued by world players’ union FIFPRO earlier this season, which also likened FIFA president Gianni Infantino to an “emperor”.
Top coaches such as Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have also spoken out whilst players such as Kevin de Bruyne also believe something must be done about the increased workload. If a solution is not found then players will only suffer and the quality of football will decrease as players pick up more and more injuries.
