A place in the Premier League's top five will be guaranteed for Liverpool if they avoid defeat at Anfield against European hopefuls Brentford on Sunday in their final match of the season.
Currently, the Reds sit fifth in the table, and the Cherries are sixth, with Arne Slot’s side three points ahead of Andoni Iraola’s side.
Bournemouth are the main threat to Liverpool joining Europe’s elite can even claim Champions League football if they lose, as long as the Cherries also fall to defeat.
However, if should the Cherries win by five goals at Forest, and Liverpool lost by one then the two sides would be equal on points, goal difference and goals scored.
As per Premier League tiebreaker rules, the two teams would then be separated by their head-to-head record. This would be a good metric, except both have a win against each other this season.
Unbelievably, that would then see a play-off for fifth place which is hugely unlikely, but also mathematically possible that Liverpool and Bournemouth may need a 39th game to decide a Champions League spot.
The final day of the Premier League season kicks off at 4pm on Sunday afternoon with all games at once. All eyes will be on the Liverpool clash as fans wait to see if the impossible can be done this evening.
