Harvey Barnes handed Newcastle a sixth minute before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice to earn OM a crucial three points.
De Zerbi said afterwards: “I’m very pleased with the performance, the quality of our play, the result as well. It was a very good day for us, and a very important one.
"We have tough games on the horizon, and we want to compete in two competitions.
“Even in the first half, we created three, four, five clear-cut chances to score, but we didn’t convert them. We were unlucky, making a couple of mistakes, but I was happy with our performance in the first half.
"I told my players to keep going, to keep playing, because if we did, we would be able to find the solution to win the game.”
