In reaction, the Portugal captain has been slammed by the local press and media.

Journalist Hugo Vasconcelos wrote: "What the Portuguese captain did was deplorable. And not just because of his aggressiveness, because losing your temper in a moment of frustration can happen, even if it shouldn't.
"The worst part was the reaction, the whole charade: from the tears, as if the Irishman who received the elbow was faking it, to the shaking of his head, as if he didn't understand what was happening, to the applause from the crowd, as if it were their fault for his expulsion, not his."
Vasconcelos also stated: "Cristiano Ronaldo is 40 years old. At Wednesday's press conference, he spent the time provoking his rivals, the Irish coach, and the crowd. He created an atmosphere he couldn't control. He made a a mistake. The least he could do is apologize, but what he really should do is be ashamed."
