Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has spoken on Reece James and his constant injury set backs.

Michael Owen was the last British player to clinch the Ballon d'Or but was eventually forced to retire at the age of 33 thanks as he admitted his “mind was about to explode” due to recurring groin and thigh problems.

Owen’s problems are similar to Reece James who picked up yet another hamstring problem following Tuesday's frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana.

Speaking to Tonybet, Cascarino admits he feels for James, who is a doubt for England’s clash with the DR Congo on Wednesday night in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.

“It’s around three years ago since Reece James had his hamstring surgery, and it reminds me a little of Michael Owen’s career.

“Owen was never the same player after his surgery, and Michael admits that himself. After a hamstring surgery, you’re always prone to recurring injuries and that’s why Chelsea have managed James’ game time so much.

“It’s not a shock that Reece has had another issue during the World Cup, and I just feel sorry for him. He’s a terrific player but he’s had a very serious injury and that’s affected him desperately.”

With James out of action once again, Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will be worried ahead of the new season where the fullback could be a concern once more due to his constant injuries and lack of availability.
