Solskjaer: Sir Alex wanted Shearer at Man Utd; I hope he was happy with me

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer concedes he was a cheap alternative to Alan Shearer at Manchester United.

However, the United hero is confident he proved value for money at United.

He told Four Four Two: "Sir Alex wanted Alan Shearer, who could blame him? He was an extraordinary striker.

"But many goals don't guarantee trophies. United signed a cheaper striker and I hope he was happy with me.

"I didn't feel any pressure, for me it was a privilege. I scored the first goal after just 6 minutes in my debut match. Eric Cantona was the first to celebrate with me, David Beckham was the second. I looked at the crazy crowd and all the players thanked me. It was a crazy moment, the start of something special. I played with some of the best players in the world, but we were one of the best teams in the world.

"We had a fantastic dressing room. We challenged each other, we loved each other, we fought because we needed it to win. We had some fiery characters. David May was the joker, Paul Scholes was the silent one, always sitting at the back making ironic comments. Giggs was the entertainer. Eric Cantona created the atmosphere. When he entered the locker room, everyone admired him."
