Both sides have several hurdles to cross before a potential final in New Jersey on July 19, but the structure of the tournament draw is keeping them apart, ahead of Argentina's last 16 clash with Egypt in Atlanta.
Spain edged out a late 1-0 win over Portugal to set up a quarter final date with Belgium and Luis de la Fuente's team will take on either Morocco or France in the semis if they pass that test.
As for the holders, they will meet Colombia or Switzerland if they knock out Egypt, with England or Norway lined up in the final four.
FIFA's Finalissima - played between the Copa America winners and the UEFA European champions - was cancelled earlier this year which meant no meeting between De la Fuente and Scaloni.
Argentina came into the 2026 tournament not just as world champions, but also winners of the last two Copa America competitions, and Scaloni only has eyes for La Roja in the final showdown at the MetLife Stadium.
"If we face Spain in the final, I’ll take it. We’re going to try.
“This World Cup is proving difficult for everyone. France are formidable, but they struggled against Paraguay. Spain beat Portugal, but it was also a tough match. No team has maintained the same level of performance they had before the World Cup because their opponents are playing well.
"Conditions are also different from previous World Cups. Most of the players who have played a lot of matches this year are feeling it, and that’s why I think the level isn’t what we’re used to."
