Rory Wilson and Bradley Burrowes struck for Villa, while AZ's goalscorers were Tycho de Wit and Hessel de Wit, who scored their equaliser late on.
:We’re obviously disappointed with the result,” Shan told Villa's website afterwards. “I thought the performance warranted a win.
“Reflecting and debriefing the boys, I thought we gifted two goals. The second goal is probably on me – a little bit of game management.
“They’ve got some good players, some good individuals, and tactically as a team, they’ve got some good patterns and a good idea.
“We had a little bit of a shift in our shape out of possession in game, and I thought the boys adapted to that tactically very, very well.
“We tried to try to tidy it up and hone in on it at half-time, but in game, the boys showed some tactical adaptability as well.
“In possession, for large parts of the game, I thought tactically we were outstanding.”
