Milan's title chances are all but over after Sunday's defeat at Lazio.
Allegri's agent, Giovanni Branchini, told RAI Radio 1: "Allegri's message has always been very concrete and balanced: he never thought about winning the Scudetto.
"He never said about chasing Inter, and he always said let's watch our backs, because the goal is to qualify for the Champions League. Some may have thought it was a strategy. Instead, it's realism and fairness."
Branchini also discussed Rafael Leao's form problems.
He said, "The dynamics of the club are complex: Leao is an asset to the club, so various factors must be considered. He's not making a huge contribution this year, it's clear to everyone.
"He remains an important player and must be defended until the end, as Allegri did yesterday after the match, despite the abrupt outcome of his substitution."
