Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken on Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres and his lack of goals this season.

The 27-year-old has three goals this season, all coming in the Premier League in what has been a poor start for the striker who scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting in his two seasons at the Portuguese club.

The Swedish international has not scored for six matches under manager Mikel Arteta who has been patient with him so far despite rarely finding the back of the net.

Ferdinand has brushed off criticism of him, however, and said that as long as Arsenal are top of the league then Gyokeres and Arteta will be happy.

"He's doing alright," he said on his Rio Presents podcast. "You're top of the league, everything's rosy when you're top of the league.

"People don't get questioned much, when Liverpool were top of the league and hadn't lost a game, was anyone questioning Liverpool?".

"They lost a couple of games and everyone's saying they're on their knees and might be out of the title race - it's mad. He's doing alright, he's not pulling up trees or creating magic but he's in a team that's top of the league so I'm sure he's happy."

His lack of goals are not a problem as Arsenal are winning at the moment, but if Arteta’s side start to drop points then the finger will be pointed at Gyokeres who is not doing his job in attack.

Gyokeres is in the Sweden squad for the World Cup qualification double header against Switzerland and Kosovo as he looks to bounce back and start to find his shooting boots before he returns to club football.
