Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa says it was the right decision to be left out of the DR Congo's AFCON squad.

Wissa, after suffering a knee injury with DR Congo in preseason, has fully recovered and is now amongst the goals for his new club.

However, with AFCON now underway, he insists it was the right call to leave him out of the national team's squad.

"I’m not in the best shape to represent my country right now. It’s a very difficult decision to make," Wissa told Foot RDC.

"The DRC holds a special place in my heart. I can only wish my team-mates the best of luck in this AFCON. The most important thing now is to get back in shape so I can help the team during the play-offs in March."

DR Congo are off to a winning start in Morocco after victory against Benin on Thursday in their opener.
