Brighton ace Carlos Baleba remains a target after United failed with an offer for the Cameroon international over the summer.
However, with Brighton insisting Baleba won't leave for less than £100m, United see Anderson as a cheaper alternative. There is also a belief that Anderson, despite his attacking qualities, can play as a No6 long-term.
Signing both players hasn't been ruled out, though much will depend on finding a buyer for Kobbie Mainoo over the January market.
