Mainoo has not started a Premier League game this season and is widely reported to be open to a January departure as he seeks game time ahead of next year’s World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The England international asked to leave on loan during the summer before seeing his exit blocked by manager Ruben Amorim who, despite wanting him to stay, has not handed him any opportunities.
Now, journalist David Ornstein has reported that Mainoo has not entered contract talks with the club for some time as interest from the Serie A continues to grow.
“Kobbie Mainoo is a fascinating one. There’s been no progress on talks over a new contract that expires in 2027. There’s an option to extend it by a year, there’s not really been talks for quite a long time.
“He’s on a low salary, which means Manchester United will be comfortable because it’s not exactly a financial burden, but clubs looking at him might see that as an attractive proposition as well.
“He wanted to go in the summer on loan, as I revealed at the time. Ruben Amorim says he wants him to stay and fight for a place. I guess he would say that.”
The 20-year-old has played just 138 minutes in the league this season and with just over a month before the January transfer window opens, a move looks increasingly likely for the youngster who is clearly keen to escape the club.
