Former Newcastle and Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum has hit out after being dragged into the debate surrounding Alexander Isak’s transfer saga.

Isak, 25, recently released a bombshell statement claiming that "promises were broken and trust is lost" as he continues to push for a move to Liverpool.

Newcastle later responded, saying that the conditions for a sale had not been met and they have no intention of parting ways with the Sweden international.

His potential move to Arne Slot’s side has arguably been the biggest story of the summer transfer window, and now Wijnaldum, who played for both clubs, has been dragged into it.

ESPN shared a social media post reminding fans of what the former midfielder said when he left Newcastle for Liverpool back in 2016.

The post said: "When the previous season ended, I said that I wouldn't force a move. When Liverpool came in for me, I made up my mind that I wanted to come here, but I wasn't going to force it because I appreciated what Newcastle, and their fans did for me."

Wijnaldum then responded by saying: "This is something I said almost 10 years ago before my move to Liverpool. Why do you post it like it’s my opinion about Isak his decision? This is something between Isak and Newcastle/Liverpool please keep me out of it. Thank you." He then posted a story with the 'facepalm' and wrote: "The media".
