According to BBC Sport, the 29-year-old has challenged the validity of the final ten months of his deal at Selhurst Park.
Mateta, who started in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Everton on Saturday (August 22), signed from Mainz 05 back in 2021.
He joined on an initial 18-month loan before making the move permanent and signing a four-and-a-half-year deal, including an option to extend by a further 12 months, in January 2022.
Palace activated that option in 2024, meaning Mateta’s current deal at the club is set to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season.
Mateta, however, has disputed that, claiming the final year of his contract should be considered null and void.
There hasn’t been an official announcement of the outcome, but it’s understood Mateta’s contract remains binding.
The striker even took his argument to FIFA, who have ruled that his contract situation is out of their jurisdiction.
