Football finance expert Professor Rob Wilson says Manchester City's punishment will be much worse than Chelsea's.

This week, Chelsea were handed a one-year transfer ban, suspended for two years, alongside a £10M penalty following alleged financial regulation violations.

This occurred during Roman Abramovich's tenure as owner and the club self reported the violations which reports state has lowered the punishment.

Now, speaking to OLBG, Wilson says the punishment for Manchester City could be much worse as the investigation continues into the side who have 115 charges placed against them.

“It's probably worth noting that Chelsea have self-reported a number of issues since taking over in 2022, which I think has mitigated some of the sanctioning, and certainly why the sanctions are financial and conditional, rather than sporting like a points deduction or something like that.

“How would these compare the City’s charges, if they are found guilty? Chelsea self-reported their issues, whereas City are in a legal battle to defend their own. If they are found guilty of any of the material charges, the only possible outcome is points deductions and financial penalties.

“It’s hard to multiply City’s charges based on what Chelsea have received, but if they are found guilty, I’d expect a points deduction of at least 40, minimum, a double-digit million fine and a transfer embargo.”

Reports state that City deny all the charges, which relate to the club breaching profit and sustainability rules by disguising payments made by their owners as sponsorship as well as handing players and managers undeclared salaries or bonuses.
