The Mirror says Emery sees Thiago as a like-for-like replacement for Jhon Duran after his sale almost a year ago to Al-Nassr.
Emery is a big fan of Thiago and is pushing Villa's board to test Brentford's resolve with a £50m offer over the New Year.
Thiago, after missing almost the entire last season, has been outstanding for the Bees this term, scoring 10 goals in 14 appearances so far.
In contrast, Watkins has only one goal in 17 matches.
