A deal to 2030 has been tabled to Saliba and Arteta said: "We've recently seen many motivated players who see Arsenal as the best opportunity for their careers.
"Even with William, we had different ideas at the beginning of our relationship, but we came to the same conclusion."
He then revealed the background to his conversation with Saliba: "I was very direct with him. When you hear all these rumours, you understand that there are expectations.
"I looked at him and asked him, and he replied: 'No, I want to stay here and I want to play here for you.' And so it will be."
