Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has opened up about his exit from Sporting Lisbon this summer.

The Arsenal forward went on strike at Sporting CP before earning his move to the Emirates earlier this summer in a move that had been on the cards for several weeks. The Swedish international joined in a £63.5M deal that broke the hearts of many Portuguese fans.

The 27-year-old has scored twice in three games for The Gunners and reportedly went AWOL before getting his dream move. Gyokeres spoke recently about how critics should not talk about what they have no idea about, as he defended himself and his reputation.

“There are a lot of people out there who have strong opinions about things they don’t really know. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion, but it’s impossible to please everyone. I don’t feel I need to prove anything to people who have no insight into what actually happened.

“It was tough. We waited a long time at one point, but I’m happy it was finalised in time and I got to be part of the pre-season. Of course, it was a shame how it ended, but that’s how it went this time. Sometimes life is like that.”

“I was in negotiations and the holiday was extended because of that. I don’t want to go into details about why I didn’t come back.”

His move to North London was certainly controversial but it looks like there is more to the story of how his time at Sporting ended. Gyokeres clearly regrets how it came to a close, as he now focuses on the international break and joining up with his Swedish teammates.
