Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is in a race against time to get back to fitness ahead of the new season.

Last weekend the Cameroonian goalkeeper had suffered a hamstring injury in the first week of pre-season training in what is a huge blow for manager Ruben Amorim before the season has even begun.

Onana's injury also raised the prospect of United having to go into the market to buy a new keeper as cover for the Cameroon international or switch to either Tom Heaton or Altay Bayindir. The shot stopper made high-profile mistakes against Nottingham Forest, Viktoria Plzen and Lyon last season but Amorim still sees him as the club No.1 ahead of the new campaign.

Now, in some good news for the club United are hopeful he will have recovered sufficiently to potentially play a part in the final game in Atlanta against Everton after the club face Leeds United, West Ham United and Bournemouth in their tour of the US.

Onana is understood to have responded well to initial treatment and is on the fast track to full fitness as the season draws closer. Bayindir is expected to take most of the minutes during the US tour and there is a chance that he will impress Amorim in the opening few games enough to warrant spot in their first league game against Arsenal in mid-August.

Despite his mistakes, Onana has no plans to leave Old Trafford this summer and will only leave the club if United want to sell him, which is not the case as Amorim focuses on his midfield and attack which have been very disappointing in the past few seasons.
