Wolves are preparing for a fire sale following relegation to the Championship, and Joao Gomes is nailed-on to depart once the season ends.

Gomes has been exceptional in the middle of the park for Wolves since joining from Flamengo in January 2023, becoming one of the Premier League's best ball-winning midfielders.

In a side that was officially relegated last month, the 25-year-old has been a shining light, and, unsurprisingly, Champions League club Atletico Madrid are closing in on his signature.

According to Matteo Moretto, Atletico Madrid have practically finalised the signing of Gomes after nearing a verbal agreement worth around €45m last week.

Despite coming close to leaving Molineux, if reports are correct, the Brazil international has still expressed his "love" for the city of Wolverhampton in a recent interview.

“I feel very, very sad. Not only me, but my family, for the fans here. I love this city and the people here, for me it’s a very big disappointment," Gomes said.

“It’s very hard to keep going, but we have to fight and I will do my job. We need to be professional, we need to play for the fans and for the city. My son was born here, the city is amazing, the people are amazing, so it is very, very hard," he added.

Gomes will likely play his final games for Wolves against Fulham and Burnley before officially completing a switch to the Spanish giants.
