Konate was not seen with the Liverpool squad at the club's open training session at Kirkby on Tuesday afternoon and manager Arne Slot revealed said that the family matter was "very sad" for the 26-year-old.
Van Dijk also gave his condolences:
"My thoughts are with him (Konate). I'm very happy to play with Joe. We are good friends, that helps as well. He played outstanding and was important in the first goal."
Now, the Frenchman confirmed the sad news in an Instagram post on Thursday afternoon with the text:
“From Him we come, and to Him we return."
It is yet to be seen whether the defender will return to the fold for this weekend’s clash with Bournemouth in what is a tough time for the defender, with football being the last thing on his mind.
In Konate's absence, Joe Gomez started in defence alongside Virgil van Dijk and helped keep a clean sheet in Liverpool's 3-0 win over the Ligue 1 side.
Gomez is likely to start once more against the Cherries as Liverpool aim to keep within the top 4 as the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea keep hot on their tale.
