The Irons have been in the USA since Wednesday and the match with United will be the first of their tour.
Potter said in his preview: "It's always nice to play Manchester United, and it’s at the MetLife Stadium, which I’m really looking forward to. I’ve not been yet, and it’s meant to be fantastic.
"It’s about playing for us, and getting some more minutes in the players’ legs. We want to adapt some things tactically, learn more about each other and just continue the process of learning and developing the team.
"You don't have time to catch up once the season’s started, so it’s really important we kick on in the right way and make the most of the time we’ve got.
"It's always a good game against Manchester United, I think. It's always a strong test for us.
"I think we're still at the point where we have to focus on ourselves, how we want to play and how the team is looking. As I said, we need to carry on building the fitness in the players, and it could be the first 90 minutes for some players this season.
"Manchester United bring their own challenge, but we need to think about ourselves, what we want to do and try and give the best version of ourselves."
