The Red Devils are fourth in the Premier League table, three points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea as the club battle it out for a Champions League spot under interim boss Michael Carrick.
Carrick has won five of his six games in charge including victories over the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City which no fan would have predicted under former manager Ruben Amorim.
United are in fine form as fans’ spirits are lifted under Carrick who looks like the real deal so far. Speaking to GOAL, in association with BetBrain, Sharpe admitted that the side could be title contenders next season.
“I don’t think they are a million miles away. They have proven that since Carrick has come in. They have beaten a couple of the top teams.
“They are doing a good job. They are only a couple of points away from third, and not a million miles away from the top two. If you look back over the season on the points that they have thrown away, they could have been a lot closer.
“I think with three or four additions in the summer, of top quality, then as long as there is consistency there and hard work, I don’t think they are a million miles away at all.”
The 20-time English champions face Crystal Palace this weekend as they aim to remain inside the top 4.
With just 10 games remaining in the Premier League season, Carrick must continue to pick up wins to secure European football and a permanent role next season.
