New manager Xabi Alonso has asked the club to sign Chavarria as the replacement, but the move appears to have stalled.
According to journalist Nizaar Kinsella, the 28-year-old is keen to get the move over the line, but his club are holding out for his release clause to be paid.
The clause in Chavarria’s Rayo Vallecano deal stands at £21.5 million, and it as yet remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be willing to activate it.
