Liverpool have paid their respects to Diogo Jota on what would have been his 29th birthday this week.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a heartbreaking car accident on July 3rd of this year, just 11 days after he got married. The two brothers were travelling to catch a ferry back to the UK from the port city of Santander. Jota had opted to drive instead of flying, following the recommendation of a doctor after a recent surgery on his lung.

Liverpool posted a photograph Jota, wearing the Portugal flag around his waist, while holding up the Premier League trophy he won last season as the Reds dominated the league. The post read:

“Today, as every day, we remember Diogo Jota on what would have been his 29th birthday.

“All of our love, thoughts and prayers continue to be with his wife Rute, his children, parents and all of his family and friends, as well as those of his brother, Andre.

“Forever in our hearts, forever our number 20.”

The Portuguese Football Federation also posted a photograph of Jota holding the UEFA Nations League trophy and wrote:

"Your legacy continues to inspire us. Forever our number 21. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers remain with your family."

Jota scored 65 goals and recorded 26 assists in 182 Liverpool appearances and the club have since retired his number 20 shirt out of respect.
