Xabi Alonso’s side have identified the 28-year-old has the perfect replacement for Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid earlier this summer.
According to BBC Sport, Chelsea’s pursuit of Chavarria isn’t going well, with Rayo Vallecano now demanding his new release clause of £42.4 million be met.
Chelsea had initially received encouragement from the club that an offer of £15m would be enough to get the deal done, but that bid was rejected.
Rayo Vallecano the demanded a fee of £21.2m, a deal that Chelsea were willing to sanction, but the Spanish club have move the goal posts yet again.
Now, Rayo have informed Chelsea that a deal won’t happen unless the defenders new release clause is met.
Chelsea do still have one advantage, however. Chavarria wants the move, although it remains to be seen just how far he’s willing to go to secure it.
