According to BBC Sport, Forest have had a £20 million offer for Ayari, 22, turned down by Brighton, who have no intention of selling.
Ayari has established himself as a key player for Brighton this season, starting 17 of his 20 Premier League games, and popping up with three goals.
Forest also tried to sign Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, but received the same answer as Brighton don’t want to lose any players mid-season.
