Mes que un club or more than a club in English has been Barcelona’s club slogan, which was said to have been first uttered by former club president Narcis de Carreras in his 1968 nomination speech.
Their website explains what the slogan represents in what is a powerful statement:
“We are more than a team of great stars, we are more than a stadium full of dreams, we are more than the goals we’ve scored and more than the trophies that we’ve won throughout our history.”
The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino is not a fan however and questioned the legitimacy of the slogan and the club who he thinks misrepresents Catalan culture.
“I think that Espanyol is a much more independent club and much more Catalan than Barcelona. They say that Barca is more than a club – what does that mean? That children should be indoctrinated in certain ideas?
“I think Barcelona is wrong about that. Every football team has its culture, and Barca is a great club, but I do not share what they want to make me buy or want to sell to people.”
“The phrase I’m going to my farm in Argentina to work before coaching Barcelona? It’s still good, isn’t it? My identification with Espanyol is total.
“People always say, ‘If Barça offers you the job, we’ll see.’ I can tell you that I would not coach Barcelona.”
The former Espanyol player is now focusing on next year’s the 2026 World Cup on home soil as he hopes to lead the US national team to glory. His words will divide many and will anger Barcelona fans while potentially putting a smile on the faces of many Espanyol supporters.
