Manchester City are set to re-sign goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley in a shock summer move.

Despite interest from Newcastle United who seem to be missing out on every transfer target this summer, City are about to snap up Trafford in a fast moving deal that was revealed on Friday morning. As per The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, City have matched a Newcastle’s offer of £27M with the player agreeing a five-year deal plus the option of a further 12 months to return to the club he left in June 2023.

Trafford has agreed personal terms with the Magpies last season but a fee could not be agreed between the two clubs. He then went on to concede just 16 goals in the league which is a new EFL record that would have only enticed manager Pep Guardiola to make a move this summer.

The 22-year-old now set to join Ederson and Stefan Ortega as goalkeepers at under Guardiola who recently complained that the Brazilian was wooden when playing out from the back and that he desires somebody to be able to match his tactical system.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the deal as City buy back Trafford who is known as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.

“EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City agree deal to sign James Trafford as new goalkeeper, here we go!

“Deal in place with Burnley under value of £40m buy back clause. Trafford said yes to Man City as Pep Guardiola wanted him.

“Newcastle are also informed about Trafford’s decision.”

After missing out on Dean Huijsen, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Bryan Mbeumo and now Trafford Newcastle’s window has gone from bad to worse as manager Eddie Howe struggles to improve his side ahead of another European campaign.
