Although Caldentey and Russo’s Arsenal side triumphed over Bonmatí’s Barcelona in this year’s Champions League final, it was Bonmatí who took to the stage in Paris, joining Lionel Messi and Michel Platini as the only players to win the Golden Ball three years in a row.
No player has ever won the Ballon d’Or four years in a row, but Bonmatí could certainly achieve such a historic feat.
Despite Barcelona currently facing financial constraints, the Catalans remain one of the top women’s teams in the world, while Spain continues to excel on the international stage.
Bonmatí is set to feature in plenty of high-profile matches this year, giving her the opportunity to lead both club and country to major titlesand potentially put herself in contention for another Ballon d’Or in 12 months’ time.
