Stoke keeper Butland: Sloppy goals cost England U21s

England U21 goalkeeper Jack Butland has blamed sloppy goals for the team's exit from the UEFA U21 European Championships.

The Young Lions needed at least a draw from their final group game against Italy to reach the semi-finals but they were beaten 3-1 by the Azzurrini on Wednesday, bowing out of the tournament.

Two goals in two minutes from Andrea Belotti and Marco Benassi, and a second-half finish from Benassi, consigned England to the bottom of Group B.

"As you can imagine I'm extremely disappointed," said Butland. "We just weren't good enough on the day.

"It's fine margins in these tournaments and we conceded two sloppy goals in two minutes and it cost us our tournament.

"You have to be ruthless at both ends of the pitch, our box and the other, and we weren't that and haven't quite been that all tournament.

"You can play as well as you like between the posts but it doesn't matter if you're not good enough at either end, and today we weren't."
