Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish is still doing groundwork on prospective signing Oguchi Onyewu. The Birmingham Mail says McLeish watched Onyewu help Standard Liege retain their Belgium title in a two-legged play-off against Anderlecht during the past fortnight.

And he has spoken to - among others - friend and Everton manager David Moyes about 'Gooch', who performed well against the Toffees in the UEFA Cup last season.

Onyewu is available on a free transfer and McLeish has already spoken to his representatives.
