Southampton defender Jannick Vestergaard admits he wants to be captain for club and country.
Vestergaard has been with Denmark this international week and is winning the confidence of national team coach Kasper Hjulmand.
Though 28, Vestergaard is only this year establishing himself as a first-choice at Southampton under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. And having helped Saints to the top of table this month, the defender's form has Hjulmand now considering him as a key member of his Denmark XI.
For his part, Vestergaard's ambitions do not end there. The Hvidovre native has captaincy ambitions - for both Southampton and Denmark.
Quoted by BT, he said, "It is natural for me to take responsibility and I always work in the interest of the team.
"I enjoyed being captain in my time on the U21 national team and was already deputy captain in Hoffenheim.
"So if one day it leads to a captain armband, then I will be proud."
Vestergaard spent four years at Hoffenheim, coming through the second tier system to establish himself as a first teamer. He also counts Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach as former clubs before joining Saints two years ago.
This season, Vestergaard has played seven times for Southampton, scoring twice. He is tied to Saints until 2022.
