Real Betis set goal of becoming climate neutral

Real Betis have become the first La Liga club to announce plans to go climate neutral, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

The Seville-based outfit have signed up to the UN's Climate Neutral Now initiative in order to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and compensate the rest.

As part of the move, Betis said their new sports city will feature renewable energy generation on site, advanced waste collection and treatment systems, and efficient energy applications.

The club are also installing smart illumination systems at their Benito Villamarín home ground, as well as taking measures to reduce single-use plastics.

In addition to taking steps to measure, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions, Betis added that they aim to become a 'platform and a facilitator' for raising awareness among their fans of the need for action to combat climate change.

"Since the beginning, Real Betis has been about its family, its members and fans," said club president Ángel Haro. "We strive to ensure that they feel Betis represents them and supports them, just as much as they support us.

"Taking action on climate is also about them, it's about our family. We understand that climate change is a threat to the livelihoods and the wellbeing of everyone on the planet, and we are doing our part."

"Our plan is to develop a detailed inventory of our emissions and define more actions to be taken to reduce emissions," added Ramón Alarcón, business director for Betis.

"We are already implementing easy to implement opportunities and we will become a channel for communicating the urgency and the opportunities for taking climate action, starting in-house with our players and staff. In our country, we are already experiencing extreme heat and an increasing lack of water. We all have to do our part."
