Ex-Liverpool ace Johnston: Smith needs to be careful with Australia-England call

Former Liverpool midfielder Craig Johnston wants Brad Smith to carefully decide which country he will represent at senior level.

The Australian-born left-back, who made his Premier League debut for the Reds on Sunday, has already played for England in the U17 and U19 teams but has emerged as a World Cup bolter for the Socceroos.

Ex-Anfield star Johnston, who deeply regrets never playing for Australia, feels that Smith should not rush his decision as it is something that could affect him later in life.

"I don't know what is going through Brad's mind but if he was my kid - and I have four daughters - I would ask him whether he feels Australian or English deep in his heart because you live with that decision for a long time after you are retired," the 53-year old told SBS.

"The last thing he will want are any regrets when he looks back at his sporting career. I would ask him to look very hard at the Australian option, if he feels like he is an Aussie in his soul.

"Brad might feel more English than he does Australian, I have no idea. But, if I were him, a lot of my decision would be based on how I will feel about it when I am 50 and 60 years of age."
