Yorke throws hat in the ring for Villa gig

Former Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke has put himself forward as a surprise candidate for the vacant managerial post at Villa Park.

Tim Sherwood was sacked from his role as Villa manager on Saturday following the Villains 2-1 defeat by Swansea City at Villa Park and Yorke believes that he could be the man to take over and get the best out of the players.

Yorke spent several successful years at Villa Park during the nineties, scoring 97 goals for Aston Villa and has expressed his interest to TalkSPORT.

Yorke said: "People are going to say I'm crazy for putting my name in the hat, but I've been involved in football for a very long time and having played for Aston Villa for 10 years, I've looked at the club and seen the direction they're heading in – it's a dire situation."

"Villa need something to really spark them up right now. I had a fantastic relationship with the fans there and I just feel when I look around at the managers up for grabs at the moment that they need something a bit more exciting to come in and really lift the place."
